The Books

The Book Editions[]

The first edition of the 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die book was published in 2003. It listed 1,001 films from 1902 to 2002 (1,003 actually because of the combined entries for Olympia 1 and 2 and Ivan the Terrible 1 and 2). Since then a new edition has been published every following year. Each of these new editions has added some new movies and removed some old ones in order to maintain the 1,001 total. Below you will find information on each of these editions, a complete list of all movies added and removed, and a list of the ninety-two (92) net changes to the original 1,001 Movies.

There have been hardcover editions published by Barron's Educational Series of New York State in 2003 (1st edition), 2004 (reprint of 1st edition, but with a couple changes), 2005 (2nd edition), 2008 (3rd edition), 2011 (4th edition), 2013 (5th Edition), and 2015 (6th Edition). There have been paperback editions published by Cassell Illustrated of London every year since 2003. Cassell's 2004 edition was a reprint of the 2003 edition and no changes were made. According to a comment at the bottom, the paperback editions were not exactly in sync with the hardcover editions in the first couple of years of changes. The information presented for each book below is based on the hardcover editions, for each year that one was published, and the paperback editions for all other years. The 2015 edition was released in both hardcover by Barron's (US) and paperback by Cassell (UK).

Note: the information presented below is based on side by side examinations of each physical book to each subsequent year's physical book. It should be accurate. If you feel it is not, please leave a comment on this page and I will look into it.

There was not a new edition published in 2022.

2003 Edition[]

This is the first edition of the book. It contains 1,001 films from 1902 to 2002.

2004 Edition[]

This is the second version of the book, but it is considered a reprint, not the second edition. It contains films from 1902 to 2003. It added two new films and removed two old ones. There were no changes to the pictures or text of the entries that remained in the book.

This is the tenth edition of the book. It contains films from 1902 to 2012. Almost the entire book is changed, from the fonts, to the layouts, to the content on each page. This was a complete re-do of the book. Anyone who has never owned a copy of this book - this is an excellent one to pick up.

A significant change was the title change from 243. The Big Carnival to 243. Ace in the Hole.
